Last month Google rolled out the voice-assisted turn-by-turn navigation in India and today it revealed it plans on bringing support for local languages in India for Google Maps. While, it did not reveal when exactly this would happen, however it did say that this would happen soon.
Google’s Lalitesh Katragadda, Country Head, India product stated that speech in local languages is not easy as currently the Indian accents are hard to crack. He said that currently the accuracy is around 70-80 percent, but for a good user experience it needs to be above 90 percent.
Additionally, the company revealed that it is still in talks with the government to bring the Street View service to the country, but there has been no breakthrough.
The company also gave some insight on how the Google Maps service was being used in different ways. It stated that many people were using it for building emergency services among others.
Apart from this, it revealed that the Google Navigation package in Android would see further improvements over the next six to eight months as the company collects more data.
