VLC media player crosses 1 billion downloads

VLC media player is a piece of software most of us use on a daily basis. Apart from its simplistic user interface, it is one video player that supports each and every conceivable video codec. Today, VideoLan has announced that their popular software has reached one billion downloads.
However, there are some caveats to this news as the download numbers don’t include Linux and only Windows and Mac OS X are included. Another problem with this stat is that VideoLan only started recording the download count from 2005 onwards, while the software has existed since 1996.
Who knows what kind of number we are looking at, considering the numbers posted are missing a decade’s worth of data and also exclude one platform. Regardless, one thing is for sure, the number is directly indicative of VLC media player’s popularity.
