MediaTek to enable sub-Rs 10,000 smartphones with dual-core chip

MediaTek has launched the dual-core MT6577 smartphone SoC which is clocked at 1GHz and features an ARM A9 core along with a PowerVR Series5 SGX GPU. This chipset has been built for sub $200 smartphones and strives to lower the price points of powerful dual-core smartphones and boost performance in web browsing and applications by 40 percent.
Apart from the twin cores and the PowerVR GPU, the MT6577 chip also integrates a 3G/HSPA modem and is ready for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Other features facilitated by the new chip include – 8-megapixel cameras, 1080p video, 1080p video playback and 720p displays. MediaTek says that the chip will ship in Q3 of 2012, and devices using this chip are already under development.
