With Office 15, Microsoft is trying to counteract multiple challenges. Firstly, it needs to simplify the Office interface to counter the growing popularity of free alternatives like Google Docs, which is chipping away at the Office market share. Additionally, it needs to adapt the Office UI for tablet devices like Microsoft’s own Surface tablet and the armada of Windows 8 tablets that will hit the market once Microsoft launches the most dramatic update to Windows in late October.
While Microsoft is not making the Office suite as a separate Win RT application, Office 15 will be one of the few apps that will work on Windows RT devices that will run on ARM-based chipsets. Microsoft is also expected to add support for PDF editing in Microsoft Word and also toning down the ribbon UI on Office so that it melds well with the Metro UI of Windows 8.
