Samsung could unveil 16-megapixel Android powered Galaxy camera at IFA: Report

Only last week we saw Nikon launch its S800c Android powered point and shoot camera. Now, GSM Arena is reporting that Samsung also intends to launch a similar product that will be a part of the Galaxy family of devices. Adding to the buzz, the report states that the device could actually be launched at the ‘Mobile Unpacked’ event alongside the rumored Galaxy Note II.
According to report, the purported Galaxy camera will basically don the shape of the Galaxy S III, but with an added 16-megapixel sensor that will have 10x of optical zoom. Because of the presence of the full-sized camera sensor, the device is said to be at least 1.5 to 2 times thicker than the supremely slender Galaxy S III smartphone.
Additionally, the camera is said to have a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display, though the report does not specify if it would have a 720p resolution like the Galaxy S III. Only yesterday, Samsung launched the Galaxy Player 5.8 with a qHD display, so to cut costs it is plausible that Samsung might opt for a lower resolution screen. That said, even if this is the case, the Galaxy Camera will have a larger and a higher resolution display than the Nikon S800c that will be released in India in October.
While common sense would dictate, Samsung using a high quality display especially for a gadget that will be used to click pictures, but then again Samsung has reserved its best display technology for the Galaxy S line of smartphones.
As far as connectivity is concerned the camera is said to have both Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi+3G(Data only) variants and the device will be powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which again gives this rumored product an edge over Nikon’s recently released solution.
It will not be very surprising if Samsung indeed goes ahead and launches a product of this kind as the company as shown a penchant for unveiling all of its whacky products at the IFA conference. Previously, Samsung unveiled the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab at IFA in 2010 and last year it unveiled the original Galaxy Note phablet.
