Ever since, Microsoft showed off the Surface tablets in June, the biggest question everyone has been asking is the price. Well folks, now we know the price and it comes directly from the horse’s mouth or actually the Microsoft online store.
It appears someone back at Redmond jumped the gun and made the pre-order page live for a few minutes and that was enough for us to know that the Surface RT tablet will cost $499 minus the Touch Cover for the 32GB version. When one adds the Touch Cover in the equation the price goes up by $100, to $599.
It appears that the 64GB version will only ship with the Touch Cover and Microsoft will not give consumers the option for a Surface with a higher memory count minus the keyboard, if the pre-order listing is to be believed.
It is not clear when Microsoft plans on opening pre-orders as they have pulled down the link, however the listing for the 32GB Surface models said shipping on October 26, which is the official launch date for Windows 8 and the Surface RT tablet.
Specs would dictate that Microsoft has the leg up over the new iPad and the gamut of Android tablets, but the Windows Store is currently a desolate island with only about 2,500 apps, so things might get though for Microsoft. Additionally, the iPad definitely has the edge in terms of display technology with its super high resolution Retina display. In comparison the Surface RT only boasts a display with a 1366×768 resolution, which is way lower than the 2048×1536 mark of the new iPad. That said, Microsoft does offer more memory and a comparable if not a superior SoC at the same price as the new iPad. Things will indeed become very interesting October 26 onwards.
