Google Chrome overtakes Internet Explorer as world’s most used web browser

After dominating the web browser space for the past eighteen years, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has been dethroned as the world’s most popular web browser courtesy Google Chrome. A report by analytics firm Statcounter, states that last week the momentous occasion happened as Chrome edged past Internet Explorer’s 31.94 percent share at 32.76 percent. This report, of course, was for the week of May 14, 2012.
Having said this, previously on March 18, Chrome managed to overtake Internet Explorer just for a day. But in May, Chrome and Internet Explorer have been neck and neck and it’s not very surprising that Chrome has finally surged ahead.
For the past ten years, third party web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome have chipped away on the dominant market share of Internet Explorer, which at one point of time commanded over 95 percent of the market, thanks to it being pre-loaded on the world’s most popular operating system, Windows.
Google Chrome, in particular, has proven to be a compelling alternative, with it being faster, securer and more intuitive than Internet Explorer. The news of Chrome overtaking IE as the world’s most popular browser comes as a double whammy for Google, whose stock Android browser became the world’s favorite mobile browser only last week as it overtook Opera Mobile.
