Google Street View like car spotted in Mumbai

Our colleagues from OnCars India spotted this Mahindra Scorpio doing its job capturing the streets of Mumbai on film. Yes, Google is working on Street View for major Indian cities! The one our colleagues caught was not as elaborate as the ones that were doing the rounds in Bangalore last year.
UPDATE: Google has denied that its Street View cars are operating in India in a written statement to BGR India.
“The story is inaccurate and misleading as Google Street View cars are not operating in India.”
If it is not Google, who could it be? We checked with MapmyIndia’s Rohan Verma and he confirmed the company had no plans of doing a Street View like product in India.

This particular car didn’t seem to have any marking on it to identify itself as a Google Street View car, though the camera on the roof was a sure give-away. Probably Google did not want at attract any attention towards the car considering their experience in Bangalore. The camera is capable of clicking 360 degrees panoramic photographs and is paired with a GPS module to geo-tag them. These photographs will be stitched together to provide the Street View experience.
In case you have just emerged from under a rock, Google’s Street View project was started in 2007 and provides 360 degrees street-level photographs of cities that are covered. The idea is to give the user a visual experience while exploring places and make them feel as if they are walking down the street themselves rather than going through a simple map.
