Nokia to acquire Scalado [update]

Nokia is acquiring assets from Swedish firm Scalado, which is behind most of the camera innovations one finds today in many smartphones across vendors. The acquisition will give Nokia all imaging technologies as well as the intellectual properties owned by Scalado. The terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
We believe this is a great acquisition by Nokia as it would enable it to regain its leadership in imaging, provided it can apply some of Scalado’s innovations on its Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone. Scalado has some neat imaging elements like face zoom, the ability to click photographs just before and after a user triggers the shutter to give the best shot as well as a feature that lets users remove unwanted elements from a picture. Most of these features have been implemented in RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system. Scalado also recently introduced the Photobeamer app for iOS that enables users to show pictures from a phone to another display connected to the Internet by just pointing the phone towards it.
Scalado’s technology along with Nokia’s PureView could change the entire camera phone market in favor of Nokia. “Nokia has been working with Scalado for more than ten years and they’ve contributed to many of our leading imaging applications,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president, Smart Devices at Nokia. “This transaction would enable us to combine our leadership in camera devices with their expertise in imaging, helping people move beyond taking pictures to capturing moments and emotions and then reliving them in many different ways.”
UPDATE: We understand that Scalado will continue to exist even after the deal and will honor its existing agreements with its clients.
