ARM announces second generation Mali-600 GPUs for smartphones, tablets and smart TVs

ARM has announced its second generation Mali-600 GPUs, which will power smartphones, tablets and smart TVs. The semiconductor company claims it will provide a 50 percent boost in performance and will be the first GPU to feature a technology called Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression (ASTC). According to ARM, this technology significantly improves battery life and optimizes the GPU performance for an always-on connected experience.
The Mali-T600 series of GPUs comprise three models – Mali-T624, Mali-T628 and Mali-T678. While the Mali-T624 and Mali-T628 have been optimized for Smart TVs and Smartphones, the Mali-T678 has been optimized for the tablet form factor.
ARM is integrating technologies it invented for the Cortex family of CPUs in these new GPUs that enables a better balancing of tasks handled by the GPU or the CPU. This delivers better performance and battery life for resource intensive applications like computational photography, multiple perspective views and real-time photo-editing.
