Auguste Rodin honored with Google Doodle on his 172nd birthday


Legendary French sculpture, Auguste Rodin, who was born on 13 November 1840 has been honored the Google way with a doodle of his famous sculpture, the Thinker on his 172nd birthday.
Born in Paris, Rodin attended Petite Êncole where he studied drawing and painting. After completing his studies he worked as a craftsman for nearly two decades.
Rodin became extremely religious in the wake of his sister Maria’s death in 1862. He joined the Catholic order, the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. The founder and the head of the Congregation Saint Peter Julian Eymard saw his talent and encouraged him to pursue sculpting. He studied under animal sculpture Antoine-Louis Barye who influenced him greatly.
His work was a departure from the traditional theme of mythology and allegory and focused more on human depictions. He gained popularity with is first major sculpture, the Age of Bronze. In 1880 he commissioned the Gates of Hell that was based on Dante’s Inferno. Some of the famous sculptures from the Gates of Hell include ‘The Thinker’ and ‘The Kiss’.
He died on November 17, 1917 due to a Lung infection.
