Facebook Camera is being rolled out for iOS first though there is no word whether there is an Android app or not. Surprisingly, the app has nothing to do with Instagram, which Facebook is acquiring for as much as $1 billion. Instead, it has been developed by Facebook’s internal photos team. Facebook realizes the importance of mobile and probably could not wait for the deal to be approved by regulators. It would be interesting to see how Instagram is eventually mashed up with Camera once the deal is approved.
Facebook’s mobile usage is growing faster than its web usage and the social networking giant needs to figure out a way to monetize it. However, before monetizing Facebook needs to make its mobile apps more user friendly and probably Camera is one of the first steps in that direction. Earlier, Facebook had released a stand-alone Messenger app for mobile that connected with Facebook Chat on web.
