LG puts tablets on backburner, to focus on smartphones alone

LG is no longer considering competing in the tablet space after burning its hands with the Optimus Pad, which even failed to launch in many countries, including India. Instead, the fourth-largest cellphone company in the world will focus on getting its smartphone sales on track, an LG spokesperson told Bloomberg. The news comes when Microsoft has launched its own tablet-laptop hybrid hardware called Surface and when Google is expected to launch a Nexus-tablet in collaboration with Asus.
Unlike its local rival Samsung, LG has not managed to launch a blockbuster smartphone. Its Optimus series of Android smartphones have failed to excite consumers like Samsung’s Galaxy or HTC’s One series of devices. LG’s smartphones lack a USP and are seen as me-too products in most markets. Considering the situation, one would think it logical for the vendor to focus on smartphones first. However, it also risks losing the plot completely in the tablet space, which could emerge to be a higher margin product, if it is done right.
