Nokia reportedly kills rumored Meltemi feature phone OS

Remember Nokia’s Meltemi OS? It was supposed to succeed Series 40 and bring more smartphone like features to low-end feature phones. According to AllthingsD, Nokia has killed the Meltemi effort and has decided to take on the lower-end Android competition with cheaper Windows Phone devices like the Nokia Lumia 610.
Of course, Nokia has never confirmed the existence of the Meltemi platform but we have seen multiple rumors of the Linux based platform. As of now, it seems like Nokia has shelved the project as part of it downsizing engineering efforts, but we can expect elements of the OS to be seen in future Nokia products.
In fact, Nokia has perhaps already given us a sneak trailer, with the new Asha 311, which boasts of a delightfully visual and intuitive swipe UI, much like the ill-fated MeeGo.
In the coming months, it will be interesting to see what Nokia comes up with for the lower segment. Obviously, we can expect Espoo doubling down on Windows Phone in the sub-Rs 15k price bracket to take on Android, but we can also expect more on the Series 40 platform.
