Google and Facebook working on removing hateful content at India’s behest: WSJ

Google and Facebook are reportedly working on removing inflammatory and hateful content at the request of the Indian government according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The Indian government believes it to be the root cause of a mass exodus in the multiple cities in the country.
Thousands of students and workers left from the north east left for home in fear of retaliation for communal violence in the north eastern state of Assam that left 78 people dead.
India has already blocked 245 web pages that are hosting videos and content of any kind that could be used to incite violence. According to the Journal, Facebook and Google have both acknowledged receiving a request for the removal of content.
Facebook states that it will remove anything that breaches its terms of service. Google has also said it is working closely with the relevant authorities.
