HTC to launch 5-inch smartphone with full 1080p HD display: DigiTimes

HTC could possibly launch an Android smartphone with a 5-inch display boasting a full 1080p HD display. The report comes from DigiTimes, which has a dubious record when it comes to getting scoops right. The source mentions the device will have a 5-inch display with a 1794×1080 pixels resolution, which sounds insane. The actual display resolution would be 1920×1080 pixels as Android ICS takes up 126 pixels for on-screen buttons on the bottom. Most high-end smartphones  these days have a maximum of 720p resolution displays and even tablets don’t have a full 1080p HD display.
Having said that, a mysterious HTC device with 1794×1080 pixels resolution display had popped up on benchmarks a couple of weeks ago but it was thought to be a tablet. The mystery device ran on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon S4 SoC, clocked at 1.5GHz paired with an Adreno 320 graphics chip. This should be enough to power the crazy display and the HTC device could be one of the flagship Snapdragon S4 devices.
The report mentions it could be launched in September or October, though we are still not entirely convinced that it would be a smartphone. We are still placing our bets on a tablet as a 1920×1080 pixel 5-inch display would be an overkill.
