Anonymous claims responsibility as GoDaddy hosted sites go offline by the millions

Millions of websites hosted by GoDaddy went offline earlier today. A member of online activist group who call themselves Anonymous has claimed responsibility for what seems to be a distributed denial of service attack. The attack does not seem to be a collective Anonymous takedown.

GoDaddy was earlier supporting the US government’s Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). However, the company was forced to reverse its stance and oppose SOPA as customers started breaking away to rivals to protest GoDaddy’s stand on the controversial Act.
However, the attacker @AnonymousOwn3r claims he was testing the “safety” of cyber security and had earlier dared to put down 99 percent of the global Internet.
At the moment most GoDaddy hosted sites and email account are inaccessible. The company said on its Twitter handle that it was aware of the sites being down and is looking into the matter. It is yet to provide any details of the reason or extent of the outage or how long it would take them to get services back to normal.
