After yesterday’s embarrassing outage, GoDaddy finally stepped out with an explanation of what really happened that led to a mass outage, which lasted for over six hours.
GoDaddy promises 99.999 percent uptime and the outage soiled its image. An Anonymous member had claimed responsibility for the outage, but GoDaddy is having none of it. Instead, the world’s leading website hosting service claimed an internal network error that led to the outage.
Yesterday, GoDaddy.com and many of our customers experienced intermittent service outages starting shortly after 10 a.m. PDT. Service was fully restored by 4 p.m. PDT.Whether it was an Anonymous attack or not, GoDaddy’s reputation has certainly taken a hit though we are not sure whether its competitors would cash in at the moment, especially when Anonymous is thought to be involved. We are struggling to figure out what is worse – to have faced a DDoS attack by Anonymous or to have an internal network error that led to a six hour outage!
The service outage was not caused by external influences. It was not a “hack” and it was not a denial of service attack (DDoS). We have determined the service outage was due to a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables. Once the issues were identified, we took corrective actions to restore services for our customers and GoDaddy.com. We have implemented measures to prevent this from occurring again.
At no time was any customer data at risk or were any of our systems compromised.
UPDATE: Anonymous is having none of GoDaddy’s explanations. The member @AnonymousOwn3r, who first claimed a DDoS attack against the web hosting giant, is now claiming he has managed to break into one of the security servers after finding vulnerabilities. The situation could blow up anytime.
cool wow godaddy is so safe lol i just found 51 vulnerabilities pastebin.com/EdCDaqQy
Now yes I broke into the security of one of godaddy servers! just expect!
