Android hits 500 million activations mark, Andy Rubin tweets ahead of iPhone 5 launch

Over 500 million Android devices have been activated around the world so far, Google’s Android boss Andy Rubin revealed via Twitter moments ago.
The number was 480 million last week, which Eric Schmidt announced on September 5 at the Motorola event in New York. This means 20 million new devices were activated within a week! Rubin mentions that on an average 1.3 million devices are activated daily. This does not include devices that don’t come with Google’s Mobile Suite like the Kindle Fire, which uses a forked version of Android and is by far the most successful tablet after the iPad.
There are no two thoughts about the timing of the tweet, which precedes Apple’s iPhone 5 launch event that is scheduled to happen in less than 24 hours from now. Rubin is just flexing his muscles even as him and his team would be closely following Apple’s event. While the iPhone might be the most popular smartphone ever, Android remains the numero uno smartphone platform in the world. And that is unlikely to change anytime soon.
There have been half a billion android activations to date, with over 1.3m added every day.
