Lenovo to launch smartphones in India

Citing slowing growth in the PC industry, Lenovo will launch its range of smartphones in India in a couple of months, Lenovo’s CEO Yang Yuagqing told Bloomberg. Lenovo started selling smartphones two-and-a-half years ago in China, where it has already overtaken Apple. The world’s second largest PC vendor is now looking at India, the Phillipines and Indonesia as the next countries to launch its smartphones.

Lenovo has plans to launch as many as 40 smartphones in this financial year. Earlier this year it tied up with Intel to launch an Android smartphone running on Intel’s Atom processor. In the interview, Yang mentions the company is willing to go the acquisition way in areas where it is weak. It is not surprising then that Lenovo was rumored to be talking to Nokia about a potential take-over. Lenovo had then denied any such development. The Chinese electronics giant has also been linked with Microsoft to develop a customized Windows Phone 8 smartphone.
