Telecom minister Kapil Sibal has confirmed to The Press Trust of India that the government is abolishing roaming charges for cell phones from next year. Earlier in May the NTP was approved which aimed to abolish cell phone roaming charges for customers.
In the meanwhile, the Department of Telecom was working on a Notice for inviting applications (NIA) for spectrum auctions after which it will work on unified license guidelines – also a part of the NTP 2012. Under the new policy, the government plans to remove roaming fees, allowing users to retain their numbers even if they move from one circle or zone to another.
As of now the NIA is on schedule to be sent on September 28, or Friday.
