Google has sent out invites for an “Android event” scheduled for October 29 in New York. The invite says “The playground is open” that could probably hint at multiple Nexus hardware partners as it has been rumored for a while.
So far, we have already seen leaks of what are said to be the Nexus smartphones from LG and Sony. Google could also unveil some new features on Android, which will be incorporated in Android 4.2 or codenamed Key Lime Pie.
More importantly, the event is lined up on the same day as Microsoft is scheduled to reveal Windows Phone 8. Earlier, Apple sent out invites to an event on October 23, where it is expected to unveil the iPad mini and an updated iMac as well as a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. This will clash with Microsoft’s Surface and Windows 8 launch, which happens a couple of days later.
Microsoft has bet the farm on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 platforms for PCs, tablets and smartphones but it is unlikely that Apple and Google would make things easy for the Redmond, Washington-based company. Windows 8 is the biggest overhaul Microsoft has done to Windows since 1995 and so far it has received mixed reviews. Little is known about Windows Phone 8 as the software giant is yet to reveal key features of the new platform.
Can Google steal Microsoft’s thunder with its Android event? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
