According to a report by research firm Strategy Analytics the Samsung Galaxy S III was the best selling smartphone in Q3 of 2012. The report states that Samsung sold 18 million Galaxy S III units while Apple sold 16.2 million units of the
iPhone 4S.
The report may sound jarring, but the fact of the matter is that Samsung is the largest mobile phone vendor in the world and it ships the largest number of smartphones by quite a long shot. Additionally, the Galaxy S III was perhaps the most hyped smartphone in first two quarters of 2012, before it was unveiled in May. On the other hand, the iPhone 4S was nearing the end of its reign as Apple’s flagship smartphone in Q3 as it was released back in October 2011.
Apple did indeed launched the iPhone 5 in September, but the phone was released at the backend of the third quarter and Apple was also struggling with a shortage of units. Hence it was not able to impact the overall unit count in Apple’s favor. This, of course should change in Q4, considering the way Apple has sold the iPhone 5. Last week, Apple released the iPhone 5 in India and within days it has sold out in the country. Apple is expected to sell over 50 million iPhone units in the October-December quarter.
That said, Samsung is still doing pretty well with the Galaxy S III as it managed to sell 10 million units in the last two months.
