Android and iOS made 80% of smartphones shipped in Q1: IDC

The latest report published by IDC, worldwide quarterly tracker indicates that Android and iOS combined to have shipped more than 80 percent of smartphones in Q1 of 2012. Out of the 152.3 million devices shipped, Android held 59 percent of the market while iOS commanded 23 percent of the market. Notably, this represents quite a jump from last year where both the platforms combined to have 54.4 percent of the market. This basically means that both the platforms have also further eaten away in the market share of Symbian, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.
Symbian was the biggest loser in this whole scenario with its market share dropping by over 60 percent, due to Nokia changing OS priorities to Windows Phone, however it was noted there was still significant demand for the platform in the wake of the Nokia PureView 808.
BlackBerry also continued its downward spiral as companies have started allowing employees to use their personal smartphones at work. In addition to this, Android and iOS have also chipped away at BlackBerry’s share in the enterprise market.
Windows Phone showed a slight glimmer of hope as its shipments were up by 26 percent thanks to Nokia’s Lumia series of phones however, its market share actually fell by 0.4 percent in comparison to last year.
Android showed a massive 145 percent jump in shipments with Samsung shipping around 45 percent of droids in the market. On the other hand, iOS consolidated its position as second with a 88 percent jump in shipments thanks to the iPhone 4S. In the meantime, checkout the IDC chart below.
