RIM ain’t bringing BBM to other platforms: WSJ

It seems like BlackBerry maker, Research In Motion (RIM), is no longer looking at licensing its popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service. According to WSJ, new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins is not interested in doling out BBM to other vendors and is instead focusing solely on BB10 and the next smartphone that will run on the new platform, which is scheduled to release in the last quarter of the year.
Before Heins took over the reigns, RIM was pursuing a strategy to bring BBM to Android and iOS. However, Heins probably felt BlackBerry smartphones will lose out on one of their key USPs. RIM says it has over 55 million BBM users globally and the service is especially popular among youngsters. The company even added a dedicated BBM key on its latest Curve 9220 smartphone to highlight the service.
