According to the report, Apple is already working on a custom iOS 6 version for the larger 16:9 ratio display and could add a fifth row of app icons on the homescreen. Within app too, it would show more information than what is currently feasible. However, it remains to be seen whether developers will have to create two versions of their apps to support the new iPhone and the older ones. I think we will get our answer during next month’s WWDC where Apple is most likely to show off iOS 6.
The bigger news, however, is that Apple is also likely to leave the current 30-pin docking port and go for something smaller. The report claims it would be something in between the mini-USB and micro-USB. If true, this would render most of the older accessories useless and would also be a big challenge for Apple’s accessory partners, considering devices with older docking ports will remain in circulation for a couple of years.
Apple might have been prompted to go for a new docking port because of the next iPhone’s new industrial design, which is rumored to be much thinner than the current iPhones. Mind you, these are all rumors right now and we are keeping our eyes peeled for more substantial proofs.
