With OSX Mountain Lion, Apple has added a number of iOS features to its desktop OS. Apple says Mountain Lion contains more than 200 features including the all new Messages app, Notification Center, system-wide Sharing, Facebook integration, Twitter integration, Dictation, Power Nap, AirPlay Mirroring, Game Center and the enhanced security of Gatekeeper. Plus, it also features enhanced iCloud integration. With the new iCloud integration now users can edit iWork documents in the cloud.
Notifications centre now allows OSX users to gain the ability to have instant mobile phone like notifications including Twitter and Facebook updates. Apple is also baking in a feature called Power Nap, which works only with the MacBook Air and the new MacBook Pro, that facilitates real time updates when the device is in sleep mode.
Apple has enabled system wide sharing which now enables sharing of links, photos, videos and other files. Additionally, the Dictation feature has been borrowed from the new iPad, and it allows the user to dictate text anywhere irrespective of the app developer.
And finally the Gatekeeper feature has been tailored to enhance security on OSX. With Gatekeeper enabled, users can either lock themselves to downloading apps exclusively from the Mac App store or have the best of both worlds by having the option of downloading the apps from the Mac App store and from developers with registered Apple IDs. If one likes to play it old school then the user can disable Gatekeeper and can download apps from the web or the Mac App store.
Apple has clarified that consumers who buy the new MacBook Pro or the new MacBook Air computers will be eligible for a free upgrade to OSX Mountain Lion.
