IDC says Nokia only shipped 2.2 million Lumia handsets in Q1

Nokia’s Lumia series of smartphones powered by Windows Phone platform is supposed to revive the fortunes of the once mighty Finnish mobile phone maker but if an IDC report is to believed, Nokia shipped only 2.2 million Lumia phones in the last quarter.
This is not only a low number for Nokia in terms if shipments, but also it does not indicate how many units have been sold to customers. When compared to competitors like Apple who sold a massive 35 million smartphones, the number of Lumia smartphones shipped seems quite puny.
That said, IDC does say that these numbers could improve substantially as Nokia only started shipping the Lumia 900 outside the US. Additionally, we believe the Lumia 610 can help matters as it is expected to hit markets later this month and is geared towards developing markets, so the numbers could improve for Lumia series.
One thing for sure, Nokia will need to ramp up sales of its devices till it can make more solid stand against its Android and iOS competitors, once Microsoft releases Windows Phone 8, later this year, which supposedly will have immense synergy with Windows 8.
