Apple has sold 250 million iPhone units

Everyone knows that the iPhone is the world’s most popular smartphone. What many won’t know is that is known as the “God Phone” and revolutionized smartphones hit 250 million unit sales last week! Apple has already launched five generations of the iPhone since 2007 and is expected to launch the sixth generation later this year.
“The iPhone portfolio has become a huge generator of cash and profit for Apple. A quarter of a billion iPhones have been shipped cumulatively worldwide in the first five years since launch and Apple reaches its fifth birthday at the top of its game. However, there are emerging signs that the iPhone’s next five years could get tougher. Some mobile operators are becoming concerned about the high level of subsidies they spend on the iPhone, while Samsung is expanding its popular Galaxy portfolio and providing Apple with more credible competition,” said Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics in a press statement to mark the fifth anniversary of the iPhone.
The timing of when Apple will hit 250 million units is up for debate considering Apple has not officially announced it. Instead, it is based on a hit-run calculation considering Apple had sold 243.3 million units by June 30. Considering iPhone sales have gone down and Apple reported 26 million iPhone sales in the June quarter, the 250 millionth iPhone is expected to be have been sold last week, according to New York Post.
The iPhone now accounts for more than half of Apple’s revenues raking in excess of $150 billion so far. “”Apple’s first iPhone was launched commercially in the United States on June 29, 2007. Between June 2007 and June 2012, we estimate the iPhone family of models has generated US$150 billion of cumulative revenues worldwide for Apple. This is an impressive achievement and it illustrates just how popular the iPhone has become during the past five years,” said Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics.
