Microsoft has finally completed development of Windows 8 and the OS reached the released to manufacturing (RTM) build. The Redmond-based software giant has outlined a timeline of how and when its partners will get access to the RTM build before the OS is released to the public on October 26, 2012.
Starting August 15, the RTM build of Windows 8 will be made available to developers building new applications via MSDN subscriptions and they will be able to download the final build of Visual Studio 2012. Even IT professionals who are testing the new OS, will have access to the RTM build via a TechNet subscription.
Microsoft customers with existing Microsoft Software Assurance will be able to download the Enterprise Edition of Windows 8 through the Volume License Service Center on August 16. On the same day, Microsoft Partner network members will have access to Windows 8.
On August 20, Microsoft Action Pack providers will get their hands on Windows 8 and on September 1, Volume License members without software assurance will get access to the new OS RTM.
From August 15 onwards, the Windows Store will go live with paid apps will start appearing on it, though only users of Windows 8 RTM will have access to paid versions of Windows applications. Currently, the Windows Store on the Release Preview of Windows 8 only allows users to download free applications.
Microsoft has settled on a final Windows 8 RTM build of 9200 after it showed the world a first glimpse of Windows 8 back in May 2011, at Computex. Later in September 2011, Microsoft showed off the developer preview of Windows 8, only to launch its Consumer Preview in February 2012 at the Mobile World Congress before it finally reached the Release Preview and RTM stages.
The world’s biggest software company plans on releasing four versions of Windows 8 – Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate, in addition to Windows RT meant for devices running ARM chipsets on October 26, 2012. Indian consumers will be able to get their hands on a Windows 8 Professional edition upgrade for Rs 699 if they have bought a compatible PC after June 2, 2012.
