RIM details standardization of screen resolutions on BlackBerry 10

RIM is standardizing the screen resolutions of future BlackBerry 10 (BB10) smartphones. It is sticking with two screen resolutions – 720×720 pixels for QWERTY Touch devices and 1280×720 pixels for full touch smartphones.
However, it maintains that the first BB 10 smartphone will have a resolution of 1280×768 pixels like the BB 10 developer alpha. It says at this moment the first phone is pretty much locked in, so it cannot change the resolution for the phone without massive manufacturing implications that would in all probability further delay the launch of the first BB10 smartphone.
RIM has detailed some solutions for developers who are developing for the first BB10 so that they don’t have to make major change to their apps when newer BB10 hardware ships with the new resolution displays.
It says either the developer could modify the application for each resolution so that the app would utilize the full resolution of a BB10 smartphone, or the developer could consider letter boxing an app to 1280×720 for the first BB10 smartphone leaving an additional 24 pixels on either side of the screen. In plain language, RIM is basically not helping the cause of developers, as either the developer makes app which offers a below-par experience on the first BB10 device or he puts in more work and retools his app for different resolutions.
Letterboxing hardly sounds like a good idea as that would neither be good for the developer nor for RIM. On the bright side, since there are just two resolutions, app development should not be a major hassle, unlike Android which supports a nth number of resolution for devices of all shapes and sizes, including tablets.
