Samsung announces the Galaxy Camera with Jelly Bean, and 21x Optical Zoom

For the past few days the rumor mill was working overtime regarding a Samsung Android powered camera and today the company made the product official. Samsung calls it the Galaxy Camera and it has a 16-megapixel sensor with a f/2.8 aperture and 23mm-480mm lens that has 21x of optical zoom. Notably, the camera runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Samsung’s TouchWiz Nature UX running on top. Additionally, it has a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor, the very same one powering the Galaxy S III, and also has 4.8-inc S-LCD display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels totaling to 308 pixels per inch. The camera also supports 3G connectivity via a micro-SIM but it does not work as a phone.
But this is just the tip of the ice-berg. Samsung has loaded a number of proprietary photography tools to make editing experience more useful. Features like auto cloud backup, Best group pose, Smart Pro mode just highlight what Samsung aims to achieve with such a camera.
Unfortunately, photographers will scorn at the fact the Galaxy Camera only supports micro-SD memory, but that is what Samsung had to do to achieve the form factor. Apart from this the camera also has 1,650 mAh battery that Samsung claims can last up to seven hours. As usual, the device supports the Google Play market, so if one is hunting for photo editing apps like Instagram, then the world is the limit.
Samsung is yet to announce pricing, but when we compare it to the Nikon S800c Android camera, we can certainly say that Samsung’s Galaxy Camera bludgeons Nikon’s foray in the Android ecosystem in terms of specs. This may mean that it will cost more than the Nikon S800c’s $350 price, but thankfully Samsung has announced that it will be shipping the product in October.
