Sony has detailed the display technology used in the Xperia V which claims to provide all the benefits of in-cell panels and is similar to them in many respects.
Only recently we have seen LG announce the Optimus G which has an in-cell panel and later in the day we expect the next iPhone to feature similar technology.
While a conventional display assembly comprises a lens, a sensor and then a display, Sony has managed to integrate the sensor and lens in one unit hence eliminating a layer between the actual display which it claims will give a more natural direct touch response. Other advantages of this display are a thinner display assembly, better image quality, less haze and 5 percent improvement in luminance. With this new direct touch experience Sony also claims that the Parallax issues will also be greatly reduced.
When combined with the Mobile Bravia Engine 2, this sure seems like pretty neat display technology. Sony is already known for its high quality display panels, in particular with the Xperia P which has a ‘white magic’ panel that comprises of RGBW sub-pixel layout that results in unparalleled whites and fantastic display legibility in direct sunlight.
