Apple has announced a revamped version of its iMac all-in-one desktop. The new iMac flaunts a new design that measures less than 5mm and has the latest generation processing chops. Apple has released 21.5-inch and 27-inch variants
. Notably, Apple innovated on the hard drive space front with its Fusion drive that combines flash and hard drive based memory in one enclosure to provide the best of both worlds and faster data speed at high capacities.
The base 21.5-inch model rocks a quad-core Intel i5 processor clocked at 2.7GHz, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and has an Nvidia GeForce GT 640M GPU, which will cost Rs 85,900. The higher-end 21.5-inch model will feature a faster quad-core Intel i5 processor clocked at 2.9GHz, 8GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive and an Nvidia GeForce 650M GPU. All this will cost Rs 99,900. The 21.5-inch models will have a display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.
The 27-inch model will start at Rs 122,900 and will be powered by a quad-core Intel i5 processor clocked at 2.7GHz, 8GB of memory, 1TB and an Nvidia GeForce 660M GPU. The higher-end 27-inch model will cost Rs 134,500 and will have a quad-core Intel i5 CPU clocked at 3.2GHz, 8GB of memory, 1TB of storage, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 660MX GPU. The 27-inch models will boast a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels, which happens to be the same as the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
Apple is allowing for a number of build to order options that include faster Intel i7 processors, up to 32GB of RAM and up to 768 GB of flash storage. Additionally, Apple will offer a number of Fusion drive combinations where users will be able to combine a 128GB flash drive with a 1TB or 3TB hard drive. Apart from the performance advantages of the Fusion drive, Apple says OS X Mountain Lion can understand which applications on the Mac will better benefit from being on the flash drive and it will automatically shift it accordingly.
As far as the I/O is concerned like the MacBook Pros with Retina Display, Apple has eliminated the optical drive from the iMac to gain the slim form. That said, Apple does offer a number of connectivity options on the iMac, which include four USB 3.0 ports, two thunderbolt ports, a SD card reader, gigabit Ethernet, a 3.5mm audio jack and a mini-display port.
Apple says that the 21.5-inch iMac will hit the shelves in November while the 27-inch model will take a month longer and will be available in December.
