Many Indian users unable to buy apps after Apple App Store gets pricing in Rupees

Earlier today, Apple flipped on the switch for Rupee pricing of apps in its Indian App Store. We were quite excited by the development and could finally get the real price of apps, rather than guessing how much it would cost in Rupees after doing a rough conversion. However, it seems that the update has broken the App Store for many users, including myself. The credit card associated with iTunes that was working fine till yesterday suddenly isn’t able to process any transactions. I have been hearing (and participating) in online chatter and I’m certainly not the only one.
The system failure seems to have been due to an RBI requirement for a two-factor authentication (2FA) to protect credit card users during online transactions in India. The App Store does not seem to support 2FA, which is probably causing the problem. We are not sure if this is the cause but it certainly could be one of the reasons.
We have reached out to Apple India and will update this post as soon as we hear from them. In the meanwhile, let us know in comments below if you are able to purchase apps by using an Indian App Store account or not. You can follow a Twitter conversation on the same here.
