The doodle today is a replica of a 24-key moog synthesizer, invented by Dr. Robert Moog. As it happens, today, it is the 78th anniversary of Dr Robert Moog, whom Google is honoring with a doodle. He passed away on August 21 2005 due to a brain tumor.
The synthesizer in the doodle not only records and plays back the tunes the user comes up with but also feature a number of signature oscillatory, filter, envelope and pitch shifting effects. Users can record, tunes and post them on Google+ or get g.co URL’s which playback the tunes one has conjured.
Dr Moog first introduced the moog synth in 1964 which later became a game changer in the blues rock revolution of the 60’s and 70’s, and it was also the precursor to the digital synthesizer used in modern day electronic music.
The moog synthesizer can be heard in many a famous Eric Clapton/Cream/Derek and the Dominos songs from the 60’s and 70’s.
The moog synth was also single handedly responsible for the creation of electronica. Famously, legendary German electronic group Kraftwerk popularized the sound of the synthesizer in their landmark album AutoBahn in 1974.
Born on May 23, 1934 Dr Robert Arthur Moog was a PHd in engineering physics from Cornell university. He founded Moog Music and R.A. Moog. Co.
In 2002, he was honored with a Grammy Award for technical achievements.
